Hircine – Of or pertaining to or suggestive of a goat especially in strong odour

HIRCINE

Men and animals have long been connected. Often certain animal characteristics are given to people to describe them. Impish like a monkey, brave as a lion, cunning as a jackal and so on. Sometimes, it also happens that physical proximity lends one an animal trait. When we live surrounded by certain animals, we are sure to smell a little like those creatures we are living with.

Hircine pertaining to or suggestive of a goat odour

Goat smell is atrociously pungent and a woman with Hircine smell is the last thing one will look for. But ironies of life are indeed strange.

A very beautiful girl named Shalu lived in the midst of nature in the high mountains. She had a creamy complexion, gentle brown eyes like a doe, wild black hair that fell down in cascading waves down to her waist and rosy pink lips like flower petals. She was tall and slim with a regal carriage and graceful,

light, springy walk acquired as a result of her nimble footed trek up and down the hills. What an amazing picture of stunning beauty she presented except for her dowdy, dirty, shabby old clothes and the horrible stink that followed her everywhere. Strong Hircine odour.

Shalu’s life in the hills was spent in the company of her old grandfather and a herd of goats they had domesticated for milk and meat. Where the goats went, Shalu also went. She and her grandad had two favourite goats they kept with them inside their little cottage. Bhoori and Kalu were their names. These nimble animals followed Shalu whenever and wherever she went to all over the mountainous terrain. Even at night they slept near her feet on her bed.

No wonder, Shalu was known as the goat woman all over. From a distance a strong Hircine smell made one aware of her presence. The smell like her pet goats became her trademark. Often it became difficult for people to be in Shalu’s vicinity because of the characteristic goat scent that emanated from her.

Once when Shalu was running after her goats on the steep slopes of the mountains, a photographer,Raj, who was visiting the region because of its gorgeous natural spots, happened to come across her. His professionally trained eyes could make out a good bone structure and classical features essential in a model for a particular project that he was working on. This woman with so many goats around her was like an ethereal vision!

But as she came nearer, running lightly with her horde, a pungent, stingy smell seemed to assail his nose. It actually became difficult for him to tolerate the intense stench. ”What smell was it?”’Raj wondered. Then it dawned on him that this was the Hircine smell. It seemed to fill his nostrils as the herd of goats surrounded him and then rushed past him. He called out to the Hircine woman following them. Her beauty seemed to be like a muse to him, bringing in his head the most creative of ideas to showcase her as a model.

As she stopped and turned towards him, he was jerked out of his reverie by an odour that was not very pleasant. It was the goats. No, they had already run off ahead. This goat like smell seemed to be a part of the doe eyed woman right in front of him. With some make over this woman was sure to he a raging success in the glamour world. And the odour would go away with the goats, of course!!!

Little did he know about animal lovers. Did not the lamb follow Mary everywhere? How could Shalu ever imagine being away from her beloved grandad and pet goats? When the proposal of getting photographed like a model in breathtaking ravishing dresses was put forward to Shalu, she could hardly believe it to be true. And then shyness and fear overtook her. She had never thought that such a thing would happen in her life.

After much coaxing and permission from her grandad, Shalu finally agreed to the proposal and left for the city with Raj the photographer and with myriad dreams in her eyes. She also carried with her, her grandad’s muffler and a piece of cloth with which she used to cover her goats when they slept with her at night. This she decided she would always keep near her to feel their presence so that she never experienced homesickness.

In the city, her life and persona underwent a total change but her heart remained in the mountains. And though they tried really hard, Raj and his team could not totally erase the Hircine odour so markedly a part of Shalu. New, fresh clothes, warm sauna bath, and repeated head showers could not put an end to the odour though of course the intensity of the pungent Hircine smell became less. It sort of lingered around Shalu no matter what and travelled with her to all places she went to.

Probably why this Hircine woman continued to be enveloped in her particular Hircine smell was because she always kept hidden with her, her grandpa’s muffler and the piece of cloth that belonged to her pet buck and doe back home in the hills. When they first met her, people of the modelling industry found the unique peculiar scent around Shalu a little enervating and strange.but gradually they got used to it.

Soon Shalu became a rage, first in the modelling world and then she got a break in the film industry. Her first movie was set in the hills among goats.

Familiar surroundings and smells made Shalu give the most natural and best performance. The movie was a roaring success. It took the Hircine woman Shalu to new heights. Raj who had first discovered this Hircine lady also struck gold with Shalu’s success, rising to even greater fame since he was the one to introduce her to the world of showbiz.

Money and fame started pouring in from all directions for Shalu. In all these years Shalu continued to visit her grandpa once in a while because the smell of her mountains, her home, her pets always rejuvenated her, filling her entire being with energy. Every time she returned to her new world of glamour,

fame, money and success, it was with a piece of clothing or article carrying the peculiar smell which was associated with her hircus horde and reminded one of mountain goats. Without this constant reminder of her previous life and dearest world always with her in her city life style, Shalu felt utterly and hopelessly lost.

Then when she was a resounding success and felt quite settled in the city, she cajoled her grandpa to make his home with her for at least a part of the year. After much argument, he finally relented. Along with grandpa also came their pets Bhuri and Kalu. Shalu refused to give them away or to part with them.

Now all those who visited Shalu’s home were greeted by the same peculiar scent which had by now become her identity, her unique hallmark. With Shalu touching new heights of popularity each day, what once was perceived as a somewhat nauseating Hircine odour began to be regarded as a kind of different, uncommon fragrance because of its association with this beautiful Hircine woman!!!

Very soon a perfume company launched a new range of deodorants which bore not only Shalu’s signature but also the signature stamp of the scent which was exclusively hers. Indeed it was the same Hircine smell which had now become a rage and was very much in vogue because the countless Shalu fans loved everything about her, even the pungent Hircine smell!!! The ways of the human world are indeed strange!!!

Moral of the Story- Behind every successful man there is a woman indeed, but behind some successful women, there is an animal. Nothing succeeds like success in the human world.
