The Wispy Clothes line

Mrs. Mehra had put clothes out to dry in her 2nd floor balcony in their colony in Shalimar Bagh. While putting the clothes on the rope, she noticed that in some places the rope had become frayed, brittle and looked weak.
She made a mental note to get a new rope and replace this one, as this one could snap any moment. She peeped into her son Ankur’s room to check on him. He was lying on his bed with a fat physics book lying on his chest, while he looked dreamily at the roof.
“Ankur! Is this how you study? You are day dreaming now?” She looked accusingly at him.
“Mom! How many times have I asked you to knock my door before barging into my room! Can I have no privacy in this house? Does everyone have to keep spying on me?!”

“Stop deflecting. What kind of study are you doing, lying supine and checking out the roof?”.
“Mom! I was thinking. Can you stop bothering me please? I am studying hard for my exams. Instead, if I flunk now, it will be your fault!”.
Mrs. Mehra snorted and Ankur grinned lazily. She said “I’ve cooked Sheera and made some Poha. Get up, wash your hands and eat something. Then go and walk outside for half an hour, get some fresh air and then come back to study. Don’t keep lying in your room like a spineless fish. Blood will not flow to your brain, and that is why you will flunk. Have you seen fish ever do anything intelligent?”
“Mom!”

Mrs. Mehra went out smiling. Ankur thought of shouting after his mom to close his door, but then realized he was a bit hungry. He decided to get up and get some grub. He loped into the living room, grabbed a plate and stacked it up with Pohe and topped it up with ketchup. Then he ambled over to the couch, and flicked on the TV and started watching AXN.
“Mom, please give me a coke”.

Mrs. Mehra shook her head. She thought of retorting, but then relented. She went over to the fridge, got a can and kept it on the coffee table in front of the couch, being careful to put a coaster under the can to avoid a water stain on the table. Ankur had his mouth full and was intently watching the TV without blinking.

Mrs. Mehra muttered sarcastically, “And thank you, for saying thank you!”
Ankur looked at his mom and mumbled like a fish “mmf umff”. Mrs. Mehra rolled her eyes and ruffled his hair at which Ankur frowned angrily and shirked his head away.

“I am going down for my evening walk Ankur. Now, please don’t watch TV for too long. Half an hour max. And please rinse your mouth after you finish eating.

And try not to burn the house down.”

Ankur never looked away from the TV. He heard a click and realized his mom had left. He slouched further into his couch and smiled. This was the life.
Mrs. Mehra met all her other friends from her gang, and they proceeded to go for their 45 mins walk in the neighborhood park. After the walk, all the ladies came back and stood chit chatting under the building in which Mrs. Mehra stayed. It was a small colony with about 20 buildings and most of her friends stayed either in her building or the adjacent ones.

Mrs. Gupta, who stayed right above her on the 3rd floor was standing next to her. A row of cars was lined parallel to the building in such a way, that a few cars would be standing under the balconies above. Mrs. Gupta was checking about the maid with Mrs. Mehra.
Mrs. Gupta – “Mrs. Mehra, what time did Sheila come to your house today?”

Mrs. Mehra – “She was late as usual. She came at 10.45. She is supposed to be at my place at 9.00 am. I am fed up of her. She made her usual excuse, that she got late at Mrs. Sharma’s house, who had too many vessels for cleaning and blah blah.”

Mrs. Gupta – “See na. She came to my place at 1 pm. I was so angry. And then she had to run before 2 pm because she had to pick Mrs. Reddy’s daughter from the school bus. She did not do the sweeping. I need another maid. This is not done!”

“Mom!”. Mrs. Gupta and Mrs. Mehra looked up to see, Shalini, Mrs. Gupta’s elder daughter shout from their 3rd floor balcony. “Mom! Somebody’s red petticoat and er, some other items of clothes are lying on the blue Wagon R parked under. I think it is your car Mehra Aunty?!”

Mrs. Mehra looked at her balcony and realized her clothes line had broken and probably some clothes flew off the balcony and fell on their car below. She shouted, “Ankur! Ankur!”.

Ankur came out into the balcony and looked down at his mom. He heard some giggles and leaned over and looked up to see Shalini and her friend Neetu standing there, holding each other’s hands and lauging. He looked down again and looked inquiringly at his mom.
Mrs. Mehra shouted “Ankur beta, some of our clothes fell on our car below. Please come down and collect them and take them up”.
Ankur slowly started turning red. His mom had turned away and was chatting away merrily with her lady friends. Ankur heard the girls above giggling harder and trying to pretend they were not laughing. Besides his mom’s petticoat her under garments were also lying on the car. He realized he couldn’t shout out to his mom. That would be more embarassing. He quietly walked down, collected his mother’s clothes and quietly walked back into their flat. He decided to be pro-active now and go to the nearby market and buy rope to replace the faulty, worn out clothes line. Mrs. Mehra came back and noticed Ankur was not in the flat. She walked into her room and saw that Ankur had thrown the clothes on her bed. She realized what had happened. She heard the door click.

She walked out and noticed Ankur walk in with a bundle in his hand. Ankur quietly stretched his hands and handed Mrs. Mehra a strong and sturdy bundle of rope, to replace the clothes line.
