Vociferous old woman 1

The art of speaking is no doubt the most beautiful gift given to us by the Almighty. But little did the Almighty know what a highly dangerous weapon was being bestowed on mankind in the form of a voice. And this weapon as per popular opinion is used most viciously and passionately more by women than men for all intents and purposes.

Vociferous woman skmclasses Bangalore

Women love to talk. And talk. And further some of the species love to go on talking and talk more and more. Wow the best torture tool in the world could be the relentless recanting of a vociferous crazed woman.

Vociferous old woman 2

Well, I once happened to know just such a specimen. She was a rotund figure with a huge equally round ‘bindi’ on her forehead. I never knew anyone who could speak as much on any and every subject with any Tom, Dick and Harry.

36 Shouting Vociferous Woman skmclasses Bangalore

Mrs. Bina Punj was her name and all of us youngsters always maintained a safe distance from Bina Aunty. Unfortunately, she lived in the block just opposite mine. We never needed an alarm. Every morning, we woke up with Bina Aunty advising the garbage picker to pick up the garbage more systematically as she directed, or arguing with the neighbours who lived on the upper floor because they had been walking on their floor till late at night and so disturbed her.

She could be heard criticizing in her loud, bellowing voice and crude language uncaring of the torment she inflicted everyday on more peace loving people like us.

37 Shouting Vociferous Woman skmclasses Bangalore

So Bina Aunty’s screeching and screaming used to be my wake up call each morning. Poor me. This unique loud human instrument took an unusual liking for me, much to my utter dismay. Probably it was a case of being attracted to someone completely opposite. I was a quiet person and an observer.

cant criticize wifes cooking ever

Now whenever, this loudmouth creation of God would see me, she considered it her duty to take me under her wings (I am sure if she had a pair literally, she would keep flapping them loudly to make more noise) as I was new to the town.

35 Vociferous Woman skmclasses Bangalore

One day she took me to the market with her, disregarding all my protests with her loud bellow of ‘no, I never accept a no’. On the way, she cornered as many people from the neighbourhood as she could for several bouts of gossip and passing the secrets and information of one to the other like a game of ‘Chinese Whispers’. Of course, though, nothing like a whisper was possible when Bina Punj was around. She was loudness, gaudiness and crudeness personified; a belching blend in her bountiful body.

She guffawed loudly, back slapped with easy familiarity even when none existed, much to the discomfort of many whom I perceived as her victims. She had to speak to just everyone and would not let them go till she had sledgehammered and bludgeoned them with her unpalatable suggestions and opinions in a voice that I felt crossed all decibels.

Once I found her explaining to a beggar the correct way to beg. I can never forget the look on the poor beggar’s face! The vegetable seller, the nearby auto drivers were all in terror of this woman’s penchant for non stop speaking. This radio could never be switched off. If you had the misfortune of being caught by her, you had no choice but to listen.

34 Gossiping Women SKMClasses Bangalore

I often wondered how her poor husband fared at home. He was never much heard or seen by anyone. Mrs. Punj always had this grudge against him that he was a man of few words. In her inimitable style and words ”he always had curd set in his mouth”. However, I thanked the heavenly deities for that! The cacophony created by two 24×7 blaring loud speakers would have been unbearable and life threatening indeed!

53 Talkative lady boring everyone

But one day, I overslept. How could that be? Where was my vociferous alarm today? I peeped out of the balcony. Lo, there stood Bina Aunty but I could hardly believe my eyes-she was not speaking a word! All those tormented by her each morning looked astounded at the silence. Then somebody had the courage to ask her husband ”What happened?”

Quite in contrast to the glum look on his wife’s face, Mr. Punj replied gleefully ”She is suffering from an attack of laryngitis and has lost her voice for some days.”

A tangible wave of relief and joy spread in the entire neighbourhood with the news. Mr. Punj did away with the curd in his mouth for some days and we enjoyed the serene beauty of peaceful mornings for at least a few days. Gods to the rescue, Divine justice indeed!

And then one morning my unwanted vociferous alarm went off again ever so more loudly…….

Moral of the story-Silence is gold. Better to collect gold then squander it. And clocks or mobiles are better as morning wake up alarms than ”’unwanted noisy human” ones.

64 Not arguing is also a problem
