The Secret of Ratanpur
Ratanpur was a quiet town. The people there were very simple and nice. They knew everybody by name and knew what happened in everybody’s life. The people were so close to each other that it was hard for an outsider to believe that people of different community and religion lived there. Everybody there celebrated every occasion. If there was a power failure then people would just gather around the big banyan tree and chat away till the power came. Such meetings even proved beneficial to the children there, as they heard a lot of stories – real incidents, mythology, or fiction. And to this lovely town came Anand Verman as a post master.
Anad Verman was a very beamish and a chirpy fellow. He loved helping people. Even though in the big cities where the post offices were turning inutile, the one in Ratanpur was an arterial source of communication for the people there. It had been just a month since he had come there. People loved him a lot. He felt that this was the place he would spend the rest of his life. He was engaged and the marriage was planned to happen in a month. Time flew by and he got his wife to stay with him in Ratanpur.
Sheela was everything he had dreamt of in a wife. Her skin was so effulgent that it mesmerised him. She handled the house like a thaumaturge. She was an excellent cook. The foods that she cooked were simple yet the most delicious that he had ever tasted. He couldn’t have asked for more and loved her to bits. Even the neighbours liked her. She had become friends with everyone around. She also had a lot of stories to share.
One day late in the night, the people of Ratanpur woke up to a howling sound. It was like a Banshee crying. The wordless lamentation was so loud and blood curling that people hardly dared to come out. They shut their ears and eyes tight and pushed their fingers deep into the ears of their children too. But nobody slept. Except for Anand! He was a content man. Nothing bothered him.
The next morning all the people of Ratanpur gathered around the big banyan tree. They had only one thing to discuss, the cry of the unknown. Nobody knew anything. Suddenly Krishna, a local shepherd boy came running. He was crying. The boodle got concerned. They asked him what had happened. He tried telling them through his sobs that somebody had stolen half of his cattle. The ones that were missing were mostly the cows that he was milking. With them gone, he would be ruined because they were his only source of income. He wailed like a woman. The people didn’t know how to comfort him. They asked him if he had searched for them everywhere. Chances would have been that they would have wandered off to some field. But Krishna had gone to every nook and corner of Ratanpur. He couldn’t find them.
As they sat discussing, Anand came by in his usual cheerful self. He had not known anything about what had happened the previous day. When he saw the worry on their faces he felt confused. He asked, “What happened? Why is everybody looking so hassled?” Everyone who heard him didn’t know how to react. They stared at him blankly. The old man in that crowd came forward and asked, “Anand babu, why, don’t you know what happened yesterday?” Anand shook his head in negative. He frowned to put pressure on his memory. He replied, “I am sorry uncle but I don’t know what happened yesterday.” The old man looked at him disbelievingly and asked, “You mean to say you didn’t hear the howl of Banshee?” Anand’s jaws dropped down. He was shocked. He asked, “The what? Banshee is a myth. As for the wailing sound I haven’t heard anything. I slept peacefully well. I was in such a deep sleep that I woke up late this morning. I didn’t hear anything unusual.”
Nobody that heard him could believe what he was saying. They looked at him as if he had gone bonkers. But they preferred to stay mum rather than argue.
Anand on the other hand thought that somebody would have played a prank, as they were simple people, they would easily fall for such things. But he did advice Krishna to file a police complaint and offered to take him to the station personally. The people too thought it to be a good suggestion.
Krishna with Anand went to file the complaint. Krishna narrated everything that had happened. The police felt the story amusing. They doubted that it could have been a thief who wailed like a Banshee to steal the cattle away. The police promised to keep their eyes open and search for the cattle. That evening Anand spoke to Sheela about the Banshee and the effect it had on people. Sheela laughed out as if she had heard a joke. Even she hadn’t heard any sound.
She too had slept really well. Like the police she too believed that it would have been the thief.
For two weeks nothing happened. Then again, late one night, people heard the howling. Next day everybody gathered to discuss what they had heard. Once more Anand and Sheela didn’t hear anything. But this time the temple deity went missing. The priest suffered a heart attack. The idol was 7,000 years old. There were stories of even Pandavas coming there to worship. Though nobody knew if those were true. It was a big blow to the all the people, including Anand, as the temple was one of the major attractions of that town. It also fed a lot of homeless destitute. This was possible only because of the ceremonies that were conducted there. Now that the idol had gone missing they will have to keep the temple shut, till they could find an idol to fill the place. But it was not such an easy task. The police were informed. Their suspicion grew stronger.
The case was assigned to Inspector Mukund. He planned to stay in Ratanpur with two constables for a week. Though nothing happened, nobody slept. Not even Anand. He was sad that such a nice town was turning unsafe.
While inspector Mukund did all the background work, nothing unusual happened while he was there. There were no suspects. Nobody could think of any name. In his investigation one thing became clear, that it was somebody from outside Ratanpur that was committing this crime. Since his one week stay was over; he called upon the priest, the old man, Anand and a few more people, informed them of his decision to go back and continue his investigation from the station.
While Mukund was gone, Anand gathered the people of Ratanpur and asked them to be vigilant. He said he was sure that it was a work of thief and not of Banshee. Because they were only messengers of death, they had nothing to do with material benefit.
Anand went home to think of a plan to trap the Banshee. All through the dinner he discussed with Sheela of the possible ways to catch the thief. She too added her opinion to the plan, trying to help in all way possible. That night he went to sleep and slept soundly. But he woke with a start. He felt unusually thirsty, so much that his throat hurt. He looked aside and saw Sheela wasn’t there. There was no water on the table either. He saw the light in the bathroom. He walked to the kitchen to get water. Suddenly he heard the blood curling voice. He froze. He couldn’t budge from where he was standing. But his common sense pushed him back to the reality. He threw his glass of water aside and dashed towards the sound. He saw a woman with open hair and white sari standing underneath the banyan tree and screaming her life out. He ran quietly and grabbed her from behind. He realized that she was blaring into a microphone. That was why the voice seemed so loud and the effect was so deep. He called out, as loudly as possible, for the people around. Hearing his voice and also realizing that the cry of Banshee had stopped all rushed out. Since it was dark they couldn’t see the face of the woman who was struggling to wriggle out and run. Somebody called for police to come. Just then there came another noise and commotion.
Krishna and two other men had caught a thief who was trying to break into the rich money-lender Sukhram’s house. Both the man and the woman were tied together. The police came. Lanterns and torches were arranged to light up the area. The hair had fallen over the woman’s face; hence nobody could see her properly. But the man was tall and well-built.
His face was shaven clean. Anand had seen this guy many a times near his house. That guy looked so eyesome and innocent, nobody could have doubted him to be a thief. The female constables too has come. They promptly marched up to the woman and held her head back for people to see.
Anand didn’t know if somebody had hit him on his head because he gasped for his breath. The woman in white was Sheela. He didn’t understand. He thought he was just imagining it. But when the priest’s wife called out her name in disbelief, he felt as if somebody had driven a stake through his heart. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he trembled with anger. He screamed at her, “You varlet! How could you do this to me? Wasn’t I keeping you happy that you had to do this to me? Speak up? Why did you cheat us all?” Sheela let out a wry smile. “Happy? What do you mean by happy? Working 24 hours in the kitchen while you enjoy life? What do you have to keep me happy? I always dreamt of marrying a rich man. Wasn’t I beautiful enough to hook one? But my parents wanted to get me married to someone of their class to avoid future troubles. When I came here, I felt that my life was over. It was then I met Sudheer. He too had a dream like mine – to be rich and happy. We fell in love the minute we met. We decided to get rich. We devised this plan. While I would wail and keep the people scared in their house, Sudheer would carry out the robbery. Two more times and we would have made more than enough to survive and get away from here. My only trouble was you, because it was difficult to come out in the night with you sleeping beside me. Hence I used to mix sleeping pill in your food. The pill was effective to give you an undisturbed sleep. But today I couldn’t mix the usual dose. The strip was over and I didn’t have time to get a new one.”
The police took both the culprits into custody. Anand sank on his knee and burst out crying. He felt used and cheated. He was left devastated. Though the people of Ratanpur held him and gave their shoulders to cry on, his soul was ripped off the optimism and happiness that he always carried with him.
