Money is Honey
Rohit is the proprietor of Sunrise Pharma Pvt Ltd, a chemical company based somewhere in India, manufacturing common medicines by the bulk and exporting them to countries less affluent than India. Truck full of raw materials came in every day only to be manhandled by unscrupulous, and over-charging, laborers, depositing them in the premises of the factory where they were loaded in the various mechanisms of various machines to start the production.
On the assembly line unruly workers operated the precious machinery with the utmost disdain, often causing unwarranted break-downs and impromptu problems, while producing an output which was well below the maximum capacity; but when the pay-day arrived not even a single day’s buffer was provided by the workers. The clientele of the company was also a problematic one, often delaying payments, making frivolous accusations about the bad quality of the product even though it was exactly the same as the previously accepted batch, announcing spontaneous changes in various specifications. Because of all these trouble inflicting factors the monetary ledger of the Sunrise Pharma was almost always in tatters. Between, defaulting payments from clients, waging the 100+ staff and unforeseen problems, they were stretched thin.
“What the hell is the matter now? Just yesterday we changed the composition for that tablet, now she wants to change it again? Why can’t she bloody make up her mind already?” agitated Rohit as Pandit came in his office with the news of a fresh change requested by the client. Pandit is the factory’s manager and sort of acts like an owner at many times owing to his long association with Sunrise Pharma.
“I straight away told her that this would be too difficult for us and that she is putting us in a very awkward position. But she just wasn’t ready to understand and threatened to give the job to someone else,” explained Pandit, in his trademarked loud voice and articulate manner.
“That’s the thing we can’t afford. We have taken such hefty loans from all around to procure raw materials and all that we will have to bow down to her,” said Rohit while nodding his head in tension. He soon gave out the necessary orders to make the changes in the procedure. Although this was a minor change it incurred the factory a significant cost which emptied all the buffer cash that was available, now they were standing on very thin ice.
The rest of the production went on smoothly and they successfully shipped the extensive consignment to the client. Now began the nail-biting wait for obtaining the payment. As is the norm in Indian business methodology to give a 3 month credit period to every transaction, meaning they had to wait for 3 months to get the payment.
3 months elapsed, the company managed to stay afloat with the help of past remittances but now it needed a big cash flow to become profitable again.
Rohit ushered into Pandit’s cabin with a wide smile on his face, and said, “So, today’s the day. No more of that bank loan and defaulting payments, everything on proper track now, set!” Pandit wore a sullen expression despite of such joviality from the other.
He said, “I got a call from Shilpa just 5 min before you walked in. The South-African government has changed some laws which banned the import of our medicines, declaring them as sub-standard,” hearing this, the color from Rohit’s face washed off like an emptying bottle of water, Pandit continued, “So as a result they won’t be able to pay us until they find another client for the product. They are ready to pay compounded interest on the outstanding funds, but right now we not getting a single penny,” the loud voice boomed in the other’s head. Both of them sank back into their chairs and contemplated over the situation. If a small client had refused their payment then it wouldn’t have been as much of a problem but since the magnitude of this one was too large, they had gone neck deep into debts fulfilling the contract. Also, in a very flawed attempt to show the stability of their company they didn’t take the 50% advance payment, as they usually did with everyone else. Who would have thought that an entire country would rebel against them?
Now faced with the intimidating task of running a factory as big as a football ground with no funds, both of them started to panic. They could feel the swarm of workers closing in on them, asking for payments, and hurling them in the sky when they refused, the machines would stop their clamoring if not fed with raw materials; soon they would rust and will be rendered worthless, their many trucks and vans would be decapitated of their parts as they lay rotting in the garage, the entire establishment along with its two owners would succumb to darkness.
That night Rohit went home and conveyed his current predicament to his family, who rouse to a fitting rage for Shilpa, ignoring the vast bureaucratic angle involved. Their lavish lifestyle immediately took a beating. The industrialists tend to live very well when things go smoothly. There were no shopping splurges, all those meals at the town’s best hotels were cancelled, all foreign holidays were put on hold, new vehicles were not bought and redundant ones were immediately sold off, stagnant properties were also liquidated, some jewelry of Rohit’s wife was also sold (much to her absolute distaste).
They ploughed through for a month, barely meeting expenses, very reluctantly taking on new business. Profit ceased to exist on account of paying the bank weekly installments. Workers started complaining about delays, trucks roamed around barely half full, machines stood ideal.
One day, Shilpa called, “Good day Mr. Rohit, how you doing?”
“Not so good, thanks to you,” replied the other solemnly.
“I have called to change that only. Our consignment just found a buyer somewhere in the Philippines who is ready to pay immediate money. I will transfer you the funds within a few hours.”
Hearing this, he swirled around his chair with joy but replied curtly, as if this hadn’t affected him the least, “That’s excellent, now I can clear my table off of your work. Time to move ahead I think. So when is your next delivery scheduled?”
“I am a little skeptical about giving my business to you as you didn’t meet our quality standards to the fullest. But still I am willing to take a chance with. I will have something for you in a couple of days; do you think you can manage it?”
“I can manage even if you give right away. But the only thing is we have changed our policy a little. You need to make a 50% advance payment before we take up your work.”
