Rajiv was a government servant posted at Burdwan in West Bengal. He was doing his first job in Burdwan. Rajiv came to Burdwan a year back. He started to settle at the place in one year’s time. He is a very poignant person who loved to make friends. Rajiv was sort of workaholic who used to be engrossed in work all the time. Rajiv would get up early in the morning and went for jog. After coming back from the morning jog, he used to get ready for the office.

subarrhation mode of betrothal where gift given by man to woman

He was new to the place and was in search of a good friend. There was a colleague with whom he started to build rapport. But, still, he was very much in need of people around him. He was missing his family back home. Rajiv would commute to her native place in the weekends. But, as the work pressure grew, it became increasingly difficult for him to travel in the weekends. He would now skip 2-3 weekends to go back to his native place. His family members were supportive of him and let him be comfortable at his work place.

As the days went, Rajiv started to get bored with the daily schedules. Rajiv would feel very lonely in the new environment. There were no friends and relatives to engage in the after work hours. He tried everything from pub to the cinema but somehow he was still not happy. He wanted to tell his situation to the family but held himself back most of the time. The family however sensed about his situation and wanted to find a girl for Rajiv. Once Rajiv was at the home, his mother raised the issue of engagement with him. Rajiv was in disapproval mode initially. He was still 26 and wanted to get married only after the age 30. So, he refused. But, his mother insisted on marrying because it will solve most of his problems. He will be engaged for most of the time.

Rajiv took some time to think about the marriage. Rajiv discussed the issue with his childhood buddies. They were also initially not in favor of the marriage.

But, seeing the present situation, they also gave nod to the marriage.

Rajiv finally got ready for marriage. He informed his mother about his readiness. His mother started to find a girl for him. With the help of his younger brother, she posted advertisements on the newspaper and websites. The marriage proposals started pouring in. Rajiv would talk about marriage on the visit to his native place. Finally, a girl was finalized. She has just passed out from her graduation. The girl’s name was Suvarna. Suvarna was also from his native village. Suvarna was beautiful and attractive. They both got engaged. Rajiv had to give gift to his girl as it was his family ritual. The couple started talking over phone.

Suvarna first came across as a nice girl but her behavior changed dramatically over the period of time. Suvarna was very caring in the initial days. But, she changed and become possessive afterwards. She was in habit of questioning many things from him. She started questioning every bit of his life. She would ask many things from him. Suvarna also came across as inveigling person. She would not disclose her whereabouts but was very much interested in knowing his schedules and work. Rajiv started to get bored with her questions. But, he decided to give this relationship some more time.
One day, after the work, Rajiv was partying with the office colleagues and somebody proposed that they should visit the nearest brothel and have some fun.

They were some drinks down and got ready for the proposal. As they moved close to the brothel, they were in high spirits. Rajiv found a girl with name Champa. Champa was very charming and good looking. Rajiv fell for her beauty and proposed to friendship. They were quite aroused in the presence of many beautiful ladies. Champa was very caring and took Rajiv along with her. Rajiv was in dizzy state of mind because he was four large pegs down. But, he was finding the company of Champa very alluring. Champa was very caring. She took off his shoes as they lie down on the bed. She asked whether he needs another drink. Rajiv obliged and asked for one more peg. Champa poured the drink all by her and brought to him. She offered to pour the drink by herself. But, Rajiv refused and took the glass from her. They started talking and he found her to be very nice from her behavior. They talked about each other and Rajiv was quite enchanted by her behavior. It was a night well spent. Rajiv promised that he would come again as he left from Champa’s place. They hugged and left from there.

Next morning, when Rajiv got up, whole episode of visiting Champa crossed his mind. He was a little shy about the incident. He was full of guilt as to what he would tell to Suvarna if she came to know about the incident. He was thinking about all this and the cellphone rang. Oh god! It was Suvarna. Suvarna shouted from other end. “Where were you, I was ringing you from quite some time now. Why you were not picking up the phone”. Suvarna was very cantankerous by nature. She would yell if things are not going according to her.

Rajiv took a pause and said that the phone was in silent and that is why he was not able to see the call. Suvarna pacified a bit. They both talked for about ten minutes. As Rajiv was on the way to the office, he was remembering Champa and his last night. It was a well spent night and the girl was awesome.

He checked his thoughts and questioned whether it is alright to go brothel when he is already engaged. What will happen if Suvarna will come to know about all this? Rajiv was thinking about this on the whole day. He came out from the office in the evening. He was thinking about visiting Champa again. She was so charming last night. It felt nice in the company of her. Rajiv first talked to Suvarna on phone. After getting free from Suvarna, he visited Champa.
As Rajiv got close to the brothel, Suvarna rang the phone again. He was talking to Suvarna on phone. Suvarna wanted to talk for long but Rajiv somehow managed to disconnect the phone by saying that he has some pending work. As Rajiv got inside the brothel area, he was searching for Champa. He enquired about Champa. Champa came from inside the room. They talked and laughed about the last night. They went inside the room. Champa offered him a drink. Rajiv graciously accepted it. They hugged and caressed each other as he finishes the drink. After finishing the drink, they turned off the light. It was a good love-making session just as close to the other night. It was 10 PM in the night as Rajiv left from that place.

Rajiv was very much satisfied with the new companion. He was worried about the Suvarna and what kind of life it would be after marriage. Suvarna is very clamant and palavering in nature. Suvarna will go mad if she comes to know about his relationship with Champa. Rajiv chose to make it very secret affair.

Rajiv would talk to Suvarna in advance before visiting Champa at the brothel. He was falling in love with Champa. Rajiv would anyhow finish the talk with Suvarna and push off to the Champa place. Champa was also very famous for the hospitality. At last, Rajiv’s agony seems to be coming to an end.
The routine of visiting Champa continued for 5 months. Champa would wait for Rajiv in advance.

However, it was not the same kind of love as Rajiv witnessed it first time. He wanted to talk to Champa but didn’t do so. They were in habit of each other for 5 months now. Champa had become exigent by now. Champa had many demands now. She would demand more money and gifts. Rajiv brought a gift every week. Now, Champa began to demand it every day. Rajiv was fed up of all this but he had no other option but to do it. By now, Champa had come to know everything about Rajiv. They were a couple with no secrets.
Rajiv would also talk about his frustration with Suvarna. Suvarna had stayed the way she was. She had become even more bad-tempered. With growing closeness with Rajiv, she would say anything to him. Meanwhile, the love with Champa also began to fade away. Champa is no more the same person. She would not get excited when he visited her. Rajiv also felt a lot of difference in the behavior of Champa. Champa would not take interest in his stories. As well, the love making seem to be a normal affair and there is nothing special about it. They would finish with it too early. Champa had also become exigent and demanding. She would demand a gift every day. Rajiv was not in a position to bring the gift every day. Rajiv’s salary was not enough to bring gift every day. So, he refused to bring it every day. Champa got angry with it and the hospitality was never the same.

Rajiv would talk about improving the services but Champa would not improve it. She demanded for more gifts. Rajiv was disappointed with all this. With no gifts every day, Champa had now started to blackmail him that she would disclose everything to Suvarna. Rajiv’s life was again in turmoil. He began fearing that what will happen if Champa discloses the relationship to Suvarna. Suvarna will not tolerate it for sure. He thought that, he should now get rid of Champa. Rajiv stopped visiting Champa. Rajiv wedding date was also close. He promised to himself that he would never visit a prostitute again in his life.
