A multi national company posted hiring of 32 candidates in a bulk for a U.S project of 4 months. Approximately 100 applicant came for the interview and among those 100, only lucky 32 were selected. On the day of Induction everybody became friends. Everybody started telling each other about their family back-ground, their likes, dislikes and all 32 became like a family. Their training session started together and it was a night shift for one month.
After hardly one or two hours of training session ,everybody used to roam around in cafeteria. Guys used to watch match on the plasma T.V, fitted in the center of the caffee. Girls used to talk about their favourite perfumes, actor, actress, movies, dresses and all the make-up knowledge and accessory best place hunting used to be their usual topic of the entire day.
Among all, Ankit, Ada, Arpita, Shruti, Shivani, Shubham, Ravi, Amit, Irfaan became good friends with each other. Ankit, shivani ,Arpita, and Ravi were good in grabbing knowledge from outside. They used to complete their training manuals and then help rest of their group. Shruti was a good singer. She used to sing and make everyone happy in their free time.
Ada was a good writer. Irfaan was funny and had a good soul making everybody laugh while Amit was engineer of their group. He used to make all the PC’s problems Ok, even before help used to come from the help desk. Everybody just started their career, and all were very happy, as all were considered equal with no comparisons were made with any.
One month Passed and their friendship bonded stronger than ever with each other. Now they came in production, on the floor. Regular quality audits by their team leader were done every week. Ankit, Arpita, Shivani and Ravi always used to be in best four, while rest of their group was not doing good in Quality.
But it did not affect their friendship in any way. They had their jelling moments very strong with each other. After a report of second week from U.S Client, their team leader announced a very strange news. Out of 32, only 17 will be promoted to a next level with offer letter of a permanent job in their hand. Everybody became shocked, as this criteria was never in sight, few weeks before.
Now everybody started competing with each other in a strange way. The friendship , of which everybody was so boastful, started falling into pieces.
Everybody started working for late hours, to give a clean flawless result. Maximum times, everyone started raising their adhoc- request and extending their time of work. Lots of changes came in everybody’s behaviour. Earlier they used to do everything together, from celebrating a close friend birthday, to shopping’s in mall on weekends, but now all thought ,that they are wasting their time on such silly things, and stopped meeting even on weekends, making excuses.
Things went even more nasty, when candidates to save their job, started tarnishing image of each other , in front of their team leader.
Few candidates started buttering team leader with gifts, asking him personally for lunch breaks, gifting him expensive items. Mistakes of other candidates, became a tool for others as a weapon to show in front of higher authority, that their collegues are not doing good work. In this sheep race candidates forgot their original nature of humanity, and started blaming each other during times of Quality Audits.
Things started growing extreme bad. Few people went into depression zone. Shruti was a soft hearted girl. She could not take pressure for long and started crying in front of everybody one day.
Her partner was not supporting her in her assigned work, and all the blame used to come to her. She started thinking, that, she is not worthy of anything.
Everybody was facing such critical situations. Innocent smiles replaced fake smiles now!!.
Around second month of productivity, The competition became even more tough. There was a rule of no holiday for three-months. Many candidates took leave as per their needs, but many sacrificed their needs, in hope of, “Maybe this criteria would add to their extra points”. Sleepless nights passed, with no proper diets, extreme 16 hours long shifts, days were passing very heavily and in fear of what will happen next?
In this fight over job, shruti, Ada and Shivani came more close to each other. Their friendship grew beyond all these means. They promised each other to remain friends for lifetime, even if they won’t get their jobs permanent. They used to meet every weekend talking about their dreams, future plans, wishlist to be fulfilled. Ada came from a family of teachers. Her parents were very strict and had very little time for their daughter. So when Shruti, Shivani started caring for her more than any, she felt protective. Shruti came from a family of bankers.
Her Father taught her to spend less and how to be satisfied even in a very low income. Shivani came from a very religious family. She was not allowed to wear short dresses and a night out was strict NO to her. Three different girls from three different cultures became friends in such a short span of time. They used to help each other in their work in office at long night hours.
Ada was a little slow in her office work, so Shruti and Shivani used to help her, after completing their work. Little time what they used to get, they used to spend with each other. Now third month Quality reports came. And while everybody had made their own best top 17 list , everybody kept it as a big secret. Shivani, Ada and Shruti were nowhere in that list.
Competition started becoming more tough each passing day. Among 32 groupism started. Candidates made their own separate groups, with whom they were comfortable. Maximum people stopped helping each other, and started making excuses, every time,if a query was popped by a candidate .
Office atmosphere became very tense. So to Start a gelling moment with Everybody, team leader, made a plan for picnic. Maximum people cancelled it. Only 10 went ahead with the team leader for picnic at a place called Pratapgarh farms. After returning everyone posted their pictures with team leader on social networking sites, like f.b., with caption flooding “ best day of my life”. Next day team leader gave a big speech, saying “ he felt bad for his team behaviour. He wanted everybody to go”.
Results of fourth month came and this time team leader did not disclose it. He said Our project was successful. To Celebrate his team good work, he ordered a big cake, and a cake cutting ceremony took place. With his entire team he clicked a picture and pasted it on his bay the next day. A get-together lunch was planned in cafeteria. Everybody was eating together.
After one week he called everybody in the conference hall. And gave the big news. Top 17 were selected, while for rest, he said “We are sad, we have to let you go”.
Rest 15 became depressed. They also worked like others for last four months, day and night, without eating and sleeping properly and here was the result. Most of the candidate were team leader favourites. While rest were kicked out straight away from the company. From last few months everybody worked very hard in hope of getting a permanent job, and here they were sitting with no hopes of future.
The sad part is, its said “ we are a customer friendly company for the customers and employees”. It’s the tag line of every company now a days, but what’s behind is a fake hope to earn money and to use employees for longer work hours with minimum benefits to them. Without saying company throws their 1000- or 2000 experienced employees as they have a notion that they can get freshers to fulfil their work requirements at a much lesser price!!.
This criteria of MNC’s should be changed, otherwise very few will have trust in them, and people will give second thoughts before joining any respected MNC.
Ada, Shivani and Shruti own a coffee corner now and are partners in their share.
People prefer a ” reasonable amount of challenge “. In an experiment to throw ball into a bucket, if the prize is given even if the person is very close to the bucket, yet people of their own go back by say 8 or 10 feet and then throw. If there is some or reasonable effort involved then people want to do the work. But if the work is too easy then people do not like to take that up.
